The Maw - Xbox 360 Live Arcade

The Maw is an Action/Adventure game with mild puzzle solving created by Twisted Pixel Games. The game was Twisted Pixel's first release, and helped pave the way for other Twisted Pixel titles such as Comic Jumper. Released in 2009, The Maw is available on the Xbox 360 Live Arcade, as well as in the Games for Windows format.

The Maw tells the timeless, coming of age tale of a humanoid alien and his amorphous, ever hungry, all devouring, ever growing, monster best friend. There is no dialogue in the entire game. The story is told through short scenes between levels, and involves an unknown race of collectors which capture all other species. This unknown race visits a world, kidnaps one of each species, and takes off. Luckily for the captured creatures, this time the ship crashes and all are released.

Players take the role of Frank, a bipedal, humanoid alien, who survives the crash alongside a small, purple blob known as the Maw. The blob and Frank quickly become friends, sharing an unspoken bond after being freed from their captors. Using an electronic leash that he finds among the ship's wreckage, Frank leads the Maw throughout the planet, attempting to avoid their previous captors at every turn.

Hopefully he remembers to clean up after his Maw...

Gameplay is relatively simple. Players lead the Maw throughout 8 levels, allowing him to eat the various creatures in each level so that he can grow bigger. After the Maw grows to a certain size, an exit to the next level opens up, and players can move on.

This simple goal is made slightly harder by the layout of each level. Luckily the Maw has the unique ability to take on the powers of other creatures when he consumes them. These powers are the key to finding enough food to keep the Maw happy and to move smoothly through the levels.

Great Maws of fire!

With just 8 short levels, The Maw lasts only around 3 hours. This time is spent in a relaxing, entertaining, and fun way though, so the Maw comes out as short and sweet. While I can't recommend buying The Maw at its normal $10 price, the game has been on sale or free during multiple promotions, at which point I can definitely recommend picking up the game.
